Three people were killed and at least seven others wounded when a gunman opened fire inside a packed movie theater in Lafayette, Louisiana Thursday night. Investigators say the gunman died from a self-inflicted wound.  It reportedly happened during a showing of the Amy Schumer comedy "Trainwreck."  Schumer tweeted: "My heart is broken."  Amid the tragedy, stories of heroism.  Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal says a teacher who took a bullet in the leg for another teacher managed to pull the fire alarm that may have saved many more lives.  Jindal - a Republican presidential candidate - said the time wasn't right to talk the politics of gun control, but called the shooting "horrific and sad."  Police haven't released the gunman's identity yet.

President Obama is sounding-off on gun violence in America. Hours before the shooting, the President said during an interview withthe BBC: "we do not have sufficient common-sense gun safety laws even in the face of repeated mass killings and if you look at the number of Americans killed since 911 by terrorism it’s less than 100; if you look at the number that have been killed by gun violence it’s in the tens of thousands."

President Obama arrives in Africa Friday. He will travel to Kenya and Ethiopia for bilateral meetings, for additional meetings of the African Union, and he will attend, as well, the Global Entrepreneurship Summit. This will be the president's fourth trip to Africa, the most of any sitting American president. It will also be the first time that a sitting American president travels to Kenya, the first time that a sitting American president travels to Ethiopia, and the first time a sitting American president addresses the African Union.

After jurors found him guilty of murder last week, now the penalty phase of the Colorado movie theater shooter trial is underway.  Witnesses who knew James Holmes when he was young boy have been testifying -- they all refer to him as Jimmy.  Defense attorneys are asking the jury to keep Holmes alive. 

Details from an autopsy released Thursday indicated Sandra Bland died as a result of suicide and that there were no signs of struggle that would be consistent with a violent death.  Warren Diepraam, the first assistant district attorney in Waller County, read details from the toxicology and autopsy reports that were conducted by the Harris County medical examiner, detailing how there were no injuries noted on Bland's face or hands that someone would typically sustain during a violent struggle. He did note that Bland had roughly 30 marks on her wrist that were in a "state of healing" which Diepraam said would indicate "that they may have been placed on her body roughly two to four weeks prior to incarceration."

The border between the United States and Mexico got a visitor Thursday afternoon: Donald Trump.  The GOP presidential contender landed in the border city of Laredo, Texas, to tour the border and give a press conference, where he highlighted what he called a "real problem."  "We have a tremendous danger on the border with the illegals coming in," Trump said.  He made the comments after the border union that had planned to give the tour backed out at the last minute.  "Border patrol is petrified of saying what’s happening, cause they have a real problem here," Trump told reporters after landing.   Trump went on to again predict that he would win the Hispanic vote, saying that he could topple Democratic frontrunner Hillary Clinton. 

Secretary of Defense Ash Carter made a trip to Iraq Thursday. Secretary Carter will meet US troops there and discuss progress by Iraqi forces to push back ISIS militants in across Iraq.

Firefighters in Northern California continue to battle a wildfire threatening communities west of Sacramento. The fast-moving Wragg Fire, near Lake Berryessa California, is threatening hundreds of homes.

Authorities in Russia have charged an airline passenger after others on board the plane were allegedly forced to restrain him. The incident was captured on cellphone video.
